How he seized the crown: HE STRUCK DOWN KING ELAH AS HE DRANK HIMSELF DRUNK IN TIRZAH
How his reign ended: HE BURNED THE KING'S HOUSE OVER HIMSELF AND DIED
The subject was a commander of half the chariots of Israel under King Elah, son of Baasha. While Elah was drinking himself drunk in the house of his steward at Tirzah, the subject conspired against him.
He went in, struck the king down, and killed him, then reigned in his place. As soon as he sat on the throne, he destroyed the entire house of Baasha, leaving not a single male, fulfilling the word the LORD had spoken against that line.
But the people were in the field besieging Gibbethon, and when they heard that the subject had conspired and killed the king, all Israel that same day made Omri, the commander of the army, king over Israel.
Omri marched up from Gibbethon and besieged Tirzah. When the subject saw that the city was taken, he went into the citadel of the king's house and burned it down over himself, and died.
He reigned only seven days, the briefest of all Israel's kings. The record adds that he died for his sins, for walking in the way of Jeroboam, so that even his short-lived treason served the judgment of God on a faithless dynasty.
