The lasting thing he built: SAMARIA, THE NEW CAPITAL OF ISRAEL
How Scripture sums up his reign: HE DID MORE EVIL THAN ALL BEFORE HIM
The subject was commander of Israel's army when the people made him king after Zimri, who had murdered the previous king and reigned only seven days.
Half the people followed a rival named Tibni, but the subject's followers prevailed, Tibni died, and the subject became sole king over Israel.
He reigned twelve years, and his lasting achievement was to buy the hill of Samaria and build there a new capital city, strong and well placed, which remained the seat of the northern kingdom.
Yet he walked in all the ways of Jeroboam and did more evil in the eyes of the LORD than all who were before him, provoking Him with worthless idols.
He founded a powerful dynasty; his son Ahab succeeded him and, with Jezebel, plunged Israel deeper into Baal worship. Long after, the prophet Micah spoke of the statutes of Omri as a byword for the sins that ruined the kingdom.
EYES ONLYRestricted // Sacred Record
- Worldly success and strong building count for nothing without faithfulness to God.
- A leader's evil example can corrupt a dynasty and a nation for generations.
- What men remember as achievement, God may weigh as guilt.
