Who guided him to his ruin: HIS MOTHER ATHALIAH AND THE HOUSE OF AHAB, TO HIS DESTRUCTION
Why he was given honorable burial: HE IS THE GRANDSON OF JEHOSHAPHAT, WHO SOUGHT THE LORD
The subject, youngest son of Jehoram, was made king of Judah by the people of Jerusalem after raiders had killed his older brothers. He was twenty-two years old, and his mother was Athaliah, granddaughter of Omri.
He too walked in the ways of the house of Ahab, for his mother was his counselor in doing wickedly. The house of Ahab were his advisers after his father's death, to his destruction.
Following their counsel, he joined Joram king of Israel, his uncle, in war against Hazael of Syria at Ramoth-gilead. When Joram was wounded, the subject went down to Jezreel to visit him as he recovered.
It was ordained by God for the subject's downfall that he should come to Joram, for when he arrived, Jehu, whom the LORD had anointed to cut off the house of Ahab, was carrying out that judgment.
Jehu struck down Joram, and then pursued the subject, who was wounded and fled but died at Megiddo. His servants carried him to Jerusalem and buried him, for he was the grandson of Jehoshaphat who had sought the LORD with all his heart.
