What the LORD called him: MY SERVANT, A CHOSEN SIGNET RING
The subject, a descendant of David through the exiled kings, led the first company of exiles back from Babylon to Jerusalem under the decree of Cyrus.
With Joshua the high priest he restored the altar and reinstituted the sacrifices, then laid the foundation of the second temple, amid shouts of joy and the weeping of those who remembered the first.
When opposition halted the work for years, the prophets Haggai and Zechariah stirred the subject and the people to rise and build again.
The LORD's word came to him that the work would be finished not by might, nor by power, but by His Spirit, and that the hands which laid the foundation would complete it.
