What he did first upon returning: HE AND ZERUBBABEL BUILT THE ALTAR AND OFFERED BURNT OFFERINGS
What the angel said as the filthy garments came off: I HAVE TAKEN YOUR INIQUITY AWAY; I WILL CLOTHE YOU WITH PURE VESTMENTS
The subject, son of Jozadak of the high-priestly line, was among the exiles who returned from Babylon with Zerubbabel to rebuild Jerusalem. As the LORD's high priest for the remnant, he took his place at the head of restored worship.
In the seventh month, when the people had settled in their towns, the subject and Zerubbabel rose and built the altar of the God of Israel on its old foundation, and offered burnt offerings on it, though fear of the surrounding peoples was upon them.
The next year they laid the foundation of the temple, and the priests in their vestments and the Levites with cymbals praised the LORD. The people shouted for joy, though the old men who had seen the first temple wept aloud.
When the work stalled under opposition and discouragement, the prophets Haggai and Zechariah stirred up the subject and Zerubbabel, and the building was taken up again with fresh resolve.
In a vision Zechariah saw the subject standing before the angel of the LORD in filthy garments, with Satan accusing him. The LORD rebuked the accuser, called him a brand plucked from the fire, took away his iniquity, and clothed him in pure vestments, a sign of a priesthood cleansed for a restored people.
