His rebuke to the people: YOU DWELL IN PANELED HOUSES WHILE MY HOUSE LIES IN RUINS
His promise of the latter house: ITS GLORY SHALL BE GREATER THAN THE FORMER
The subject prophesied to the returned exiles who had let the rebuilding of the temple stall for years while they saw to their own houses.
He rebuked them: they dwelt in paneled houses while the house of the LORD lay in ruins, and their labor did not prosper because they had neglected God's house. Consider your ways, he said.
The people, with Zerubbabel the governor and Joshua the high priest, obeyed the voice of the LORD, and the work on the temple resumed.
When some wept that the new temple seemed less than Solomon's, the subject brought the LORD's encouragement: be strong and work, for I am with you, and the glory of this latter house shall be greater than the former.
He spoke of the LORD shaking the nations, and of Zerubbabel as a signet ring, pointing beyond the rebuilt house to a greater hope.
