How the work would be done: NOT BY MIGHT, NOR BY POWER, BUT BY MY SPIRIT
The coming king: LOWLY, RIDING ON A DONKEY
The subject prophesied to the returned exiles who had grown weary in rebuilding the temple, calling them to return to the LORD and take up the work.
He received eight visions in a single night, seen and explained by an angel: horsemen patrolling the earth, a lampstand and olive trees, a high priest reclothed, and a word to Zerubbabel that the work would be finished not by might, nor by power, but by the Spirit of the LORD.
The subject saw the high priest Joshua crowned, a sign of one called the Branch who would be both priest and king and build the true temple.
He foretold the coming king, righteous and having salvation, lowly and riding on a donkey, and a fountain opened to cleanse from sin.
He spoke of one sold for thirty pieces of silver, of a shepherd struck and the sheep scattered, and of a day when they would look on him whom they had pierced and mourn, pointing beyond the return to the Messiah.
