What he could not do to his own decrees: A LAW OF THE PERSIANS COULD NOT BE REVOKED
What the sleepless night reminded him: THAT MORDECAI HAD ONCE SAVED HIS LIFE
The subject was king of Persia, reigning over a hundred and twenty-seven provinces from India to Cush, holding great feasts to display the wealth and splendor of his kingdom from his citadel at Susa.
When Queen Vashti refused to be displayed before his drunken assembly, he deposed her on the counsel of his princes, and a search was made for a new queen, and Esther the Jewess was chosen, though her people were hidden from the king.
He raised Haman above all his princes, and unwittingly sealed a decree, at Haman's urging, to destroy all the Jews on a single day, without knowing that his own queen was among them.
On a sleepless night he had the royal records read, and was reminded that Mordecai had once uncovered a plot against his life; and at Esther's banquet she revealed Haman's scheme and her own peril.
In wrath he had Haman hanged on the gallows meant for Mordecai, raised Mordecai in his place, and, since a Persian decree could not be revoked, issued a second law allowing the Jews to defend themselves; so through his court the people of God were preserved.
