The theme that fills his book: THE GREAT DAY OF THE LORD IS NEAR
The tender promise he gives at the last: THE LORD WILL REJOICE OVER YOU WITH SINGING
The subject prophesied in the days of Josiah king of Judah, a descendant of Hezekiah, of royal blood, likely speaking before or during the king's great reforms.
His central theme is the great day of the LORD, near and hastening, a day of wrath, distress, and darkness against all who had turned from Him, when the complacent who said the LORD would do neither good nor harm would be searched out.
He pronounced judgment not only on Judah for its idolatry and violence, but on the surrounding nations, Philistia, Moab, Ammon, Cush, and proud Assyria with its careless city Nineveh.
Yet he called the humble of the land to seek the LORD, to seek righteousness and humility, that they might be hidden in the day of His anger.
He ended with one of the tenderest promises in Scripture: that the LORD their God is in their midst, a mighty one who will save, who will rejoice over His people with gladness and exult over them with loud singing.
