What she declared over the place: I WILL BRING DISASTER, ALL THE WORDS OF THE BOOK THAT JUDAH HAS READ
What she promised the humbled king: YOU SHALL BE GATHERED TO YOUR GRAVE IN PEACE
In the eighteenth year of Josiah, as the temple was being repaired, the Book of the Law was found. When it was read to the king, he tore his clothes, for he saw how far Judah had fallen from its words.
Josiah sent Hilkiah the priest and his officials to inquire of the LORD. They went to the subject, a prophetess who lived in Jerusalem, wife of Shallum the keeper of the wardrobe, trusting her to speak the true word of God.
She answered with the authority of a prophet: Thus says the LORD. Because Judah had forsaken Him and burned incense to other gods, disaster would come upon this place, all the curses written in the book that had been read.
But to Josiah she brought a word of mercy. Because his heart was tender and he had humbled himself and wept before the LORD, he would be gathered to his grave in peace and would not see the evil that was to come.
On the strength of her word the king gathered the people, read the covenant in their hearing, and led a great reformation, tearing down the high places and idols. A woman's faithful oracle set a whole nation's repentance in motion.
