What Hilkiah gave him in the temple: I HAVE FOUND THE BOOK OF THE LAW IN THE HOUSE OF THE LORD
What he then did before the king: HE READ IT ALOUD IN THE HEARING OF JOSIAH
The subject was the scribe and secretary of King Josiah, sent to the temple to arrange for the payment of the workmen repairing the house of the LORD.
There Hilkiah the high priest told him he had found the Book of the Law in the house of the LORD and gave the scroll to him. The subject read it himself.
He returned to the king with a report on the temple work, and then told him of the book, reading it aloud in the hearing of Josiah.
When the king heard the words of the Law and how far the nation had strayed, he tore his clothes in grief, and it was the subject and his companions whom he sent to inquire of the LORD through the prophetess Huldah.
The subject stands at the very heart of Josiah's great reformation, a faithful official whose careful handling and reading of God's rediscovered word set a king weeping and a nation turning back. His sons and grandsons would later shelter the prophet Jeremiah.
