The LORD declared of the city: I WILL MAKE YOUR GRAVE
Its end, though once it repented under Jonah: AN OVERFLOWING FLOOD
The subject, called the Elkoshite, received the burden concerning Nineveh, that great city which had once repented under Jonah but had returned to violence and blood. His book opens as a vision written against her.
He proclaimed the LORD as slow to anger and great in power, yet by no means clearing the guilty; a stronghold to those who take refuge in Him, but pursuing His enemies into darkness. The mountains quake and the earth heaves at His presence.
The subject saw the assault upon Nineveh: the shields of her foes red, the chariots raging in the streets, the river gates opened, and the palace dissolved. He named her a den of lions now emptied, and none to make her afraid.
He cried woe upon the bloody city, full of lies and plunder, and likened her fall to No-amon of Egypt, which for all her strength was carried into exile. Her wound, he said, was grievous, and none would bemoan her.
The word of the subject was fulfilled when Nineveh fell and was left a ruin. His book stands as comfort to Judah, that the LORD sees the pride of nations and will not leave the guilty unpunished forever.
