What he did as the scroll was read: CUT IT WITH A KNIFE AND BURNED IT PIECE BY PIECE
The burial the LORD decreed for him: DRAGGED OUT LIKE A DONKEY, UNMOURNED
The subject was a son of Josiah, set on the throne by Pharaoh Neco and made to pay heavy tribute, which he wrung from the people by taxation. He did evil in the eyes of the LORD as his fathers had done.
Jeremiah rebuked him for building his palace by unrighteousness, using his neighbor's labor without wages, and for eyes set only on dishonest gain and shedding innocent blood.
The LORD told Jeremiah to write on a scroll all the words He had spoken against Israel and Judah, that perhaps the people would repent. Baruch read it in the temple, and it was brought to the king.
As the scroll was read in his winter house, the subject cut off each read portion with a scribe's knife and threw it into the fire on the hearth, until the whole scroll was burned, and he would not listen or tear his clothes in fear.
The LORD had Jeremiah write it again, with more words added, and declared judgment on the subject: he would have none to sit on David's throne, and his dead body would be cast out to the heat by day and frost by night, buried with the burial of a donkey.
