How long his reign in Jerusalem lasted: THREE MONTHS BEFORE THE SURRENDER
What the king of Babylon did for him at last: GAVE HIM A SEAT ABOVE THE OTHER KINGS
The subject was eighteen when he became king of Judah, and reigned only three months. He did evil in the eyes of the LORD, following the ways of his father Jehoiakim.
In his brief reign Nebuchadnezzar of Babylon came against Jerusalem. The subject went out and surrendered to the king of Babylon, who took him captive along with the queen mother, the officials, the craftsmen, and the treasures of the temple.
He was carried to Babylon, and Jeremiah had prophesied that though he were a signet ring on God's hand, he would be torn off, and that none of his offspring would prosper on the throne of David in that generation.
Yet after thirty-seven years of imprisonment, a new king of Babylon, Evil-merodach, showed him kindness, brought him out of prison, spoke gently to him, gave him a seat above the other captive kings, and kept him at his table all his days.
Though his direct sons did not reign, the subject is named in the genealogy of Jesus Christ, and through his grandson Zerubbabel the royal line of David continued toward the promised King.
