What Jeremiah urged him to do: SURRENDER, AND YOUR LIFE WILL BE SPARED
The last thing his eyes ever saw: HIS SONS SLAIN BEFORE HIM AT RIBLAH
The subject was the last king of Judah, made king by Nebuchadnezzar in place of his nephew and named Zedekiah. He did evil in the eyes of the LORD and did not humble himself before Jeremiah, who spoke the word of God.
Again and again the prophet urged him to submit to Babylon and live, for the LORD had appointed the exile for a set time; but the subject feared his own officials more than the word of God, and would not heed.
He rebelled against the king of Babylon, and Nebuchadnezzar came and laid siege to Jerusalem until famine gripped the city and the wall was breached.
The subject fled by night but was overtaken on the plains of Jericho. He was brought to Riblah, where his sons were slaughtered before his eyes; then his eyes were put out, and he was bound in bronze to be carried to Babylon.
The temple was burned, the walls broken down, and the people carried into exile, and the throne of David sat empty. So ended the kingdom of Judah, as the LORD had warned through His prophets.
EYES ONLYRestricted // Sacred Record
- Fear of people's opinion can silence a heart against the word of God.
- Half-hearted faith that will not fully obey ends in ruin.
- The word of the prophets is fulfilled whether or not we heed it.
