Remarks:

The subject was called as a youth, the LORD declaring that he had known and appointed him a prophet to the nations before he was born. Though he protested his youth, the LORD touched his mouth and put words in it.

For decades the subject warned Judah of coming judgment for its idolatry, enacting his message through signs: a marred and refashioned vessel at the potter's house, a ruined linen belt, and a yoke worn on his neck.

The subject was opposed, beaten, put in the stocks, thrown into a cistern, and imprisoned. He wept over his people and over the word he was compelled to speak, yet could not hold it in.

The subject foretold seventy years of Babylonian exile and, beyond it, restoration. He promised a new covenant in which the LORD would write his law on the heart and remember sin no more.

After Jerusalem fell, the subject was carried down to Egypt by a remnant against his counsel. By tradition he died there. His laments over the fallen city are preserved in a separate book.
