What he swore to the frightened people: DO NOT FEAR TO SERVE THE CHALDEANS; IT SHALL BE WELL WITH YOU
Who struck him down: ISHMAEL SON OF NETHANIAH, OF THE ROYAL SEED
When Nebuchadnezzar had carried Judah into exile and burned Jerusalem, he appointed the subject, son of Ahikam who had once protected Jeremiah, as governor over the poor people left in the land.
The subject gathered the scattered captains and their men at Mizpah and swore to them: do not fear to serve the Chaldeans; dwell in the land, gather wine and summer fruits, and it shall be well with you.
Under his care the remnant began to return from the surrounding nations and gathered an abundant harvest. For a brief season there was peace and provision in a broken land.
But Ishmael son of Nethaniah, of the royal seed and stirred up by the king of Ammon, came with ten men. Warned of the plot, the subject would not believe it and took no precaution.
At a shared meal Ishmael and his men rose and struck down the subject, along with the Jews and the Chaldean soldiers with him. The frightened remnant then fled to Egypt, and the last shepherd of the land was gone.
EYES ONLYRestricted // Sacred Record
- A generous trust can leave a good man blind to treachery.
- God can raise a shepherd for the remnant even in exile.
- Peace built on the ruins of judgment is fragile and easily broken.
