What the king did to the first scroll: HE CUT IT AND BURNED IT PIECE BY PIECE
The LORD's word to him personally: DO NOT SEEK GREAT THINGS FOR YOURSELF
The subject was the scribe of the prophet Jeremiah. At the prophet's dictation he wrote all the words the LORD had spoken on a scroll, and read them aloud in the temple when Jeremiah was barred from going.
When the scroll was read to King Jehoiakim, the king cut it column by column with a knife and threw the pieces into the fire until the whole was burned.
At the LORD's command the subject took another scroll and wrote again all the words of the first, and many similar words were added.
He also witnessed and preserved the sealed deed when Jeremiah bought a field as a sign that houses and fields would again be bought in the land after the exile.
When the subject was weary and afraid, the LORD gave him a personal word: not to seek great things for himself, but that his life would be given him as a prize of war wherever he went. He was later taken with Jeremiah down to Egypt.
