What he said to the king: THESE MEN HAVE DONE EVIL IN CASTING THE PROPHET INTO THE CISTERN
The LORD's promise to him: YOU SHALL NOT FALL BY THE SWORD, FOR YOU HAVE PUT YOUR TRUST IN ME
The subject was an Ethiopian eunuch in the house of King Zedekiah when the officials, offended by Jeremiah's words, had lowered the prophet into a muddy cistern to die of hunger.
The subject went out to the king at the Benjamin Gate and pleaded for Jeremiah, declaring that the men had done evil and the prophet would starve where they had thrown him.
The king commanded him to take thirty men and lift Jeremiah out before he died. With care, the subject gathered old rags and worn-out clothes and let them down by ropes, telling the prophet to put them under his arms against the cords.
So they drew Jeremiah up out of the cistern, and he remained in the court of the guard. A foreigner had shown the mercy that the leaders of Judah refused.
The word of the LORD came to the subject: because he had trusted in the LORD, he would not be given into the hand of those he feared when the city fell, but his life would be to him as a prize of war.
