The word that ran through scripture: THE RIGHTEOUS SHALL LIVE BY HIS FAITH
His closing resolve: THOUGH THE FIG TREE DOES NOT BLOSSOM, YET I WILL REJOICE IN THE LORD
The subject began not with a sermon to the people but with a complaint to God: how long would he cry out over violence and injustice while the LORD seemed not to act?
The LORD answered that He was raising up the Chaldeans as an instrument of judgment. This troubled the subject more, for they were more wicked than those they would punish.
He took his stand at his watchpost to see what God would answer. The LORD told him to write the vision plainly, for it awaited its appointed time, and that the righteous would live by his faith.
The LORD pronounced woes on the proud and the plunderer, declaring that the earth would be filled with the knowledge of His glory, and that the LORD was in His holy temple; let all the earth keep silence.
The subject closed with a prayer of trust: though the fig tree does not blossom and the fields yield no food, yet he would rejoice in the LORD, the God of his salvation, who made him tread on the heights.
