Their plea before the assembly: WHY SHOULD OUR FATHER'S NAME BE TAKEN AWAY?
The LORD's verdict on their case: THE DAUGHTERS OF ZELOPHEHAD ARE RIGHT
The five daughters of Zelophehad, of the tribe of Manasseh, were Mahlah, Noah, Hoglah, Milcah, and Tirzah. Their father had died in the wilderness leaving no sons, and by custom his portion of the land would pass to others.
They came and stood before Moses, Eleazar the priest, the leaders, and all the congregation at the entrance of the tent of meeting, and made their case.
They said their father had died for his own sin, not in Korah's rebellion, and had left no son, and asked why his name should be taken away from his clan for lack of a son, requesting a possession among their father's brothers.
Moses brought their case before the LORD, and the LORD answered that the daughters were right; he was to give them an inheritance among their father's brothers, and this became a lasting statute in Israel.
Later, so the inheritance would not pass out of their tribe, they were directed to marry within their father's tribe, and they obeyed. Their bold and rightful appeal shaped Israel's law and secured their family's place in the land.
