Duration the sun delayed: ABOUT A WHOLE DAY
Terms of his final charge: AS FOR ME AND MY HOUSE, WE WILL SERVE THE LORD
The subject, an assistant to Moses from his youth, was one of the twelve sent to scout Canaan. With Caleb alone he brought back a faithful report, urging the people to trust the LORD.
Commissioned to succeed Moses, the subject was charged to be strong and courageous and to meditate on the law day and night. He led Israel across the Jordan, whose waters stood in a heap while the people passed on dry ground.
At Jericho the subject followed the LORD's unusual instructions; the people marched, the priests blew the trumpets, and on the seventh day the walls fell flat. The city was devoted to destruction.
During the battle at Gibeon the subject called on the sun to stand still, and the day was prolonged until the enemy was defeated. Scripture records no day like it before or since.
The subject apportioned the land among the tribes and, in old age, gathered Israel to renew the covenant, charging them to choose whom they would serve. He declared that he and his house would serve the LORD.
