What he took against the ban: A CLOAK, SILVER, AND A WEDGE OF GOLD
His confession when the lot fell on him: I SAW, I COVETED, I TOOK, I HID
When Jericho fell, the LORD had devoted the city and its spoil to destruction, that no one take of the banned things. But the subject, of the tribe of Judah, took of them, and the anger of the LORD burned against Israel.
Not knowing the cause, Joshua sent men against the small city of Ai, and Israel was routed and fled, and about thirty-six men fell. Joshua tore his clothes and lay before the ark until evening.
The LORD told him Israel had sinned and taken of the devoted things, and could not stand until the thing was removed. In the morning the lot was cast, tribe by tribe, until it fell on the subject.
He confessed that he had seen among the spoil a beautiful cloak, silver, and a wedge of gold, had coveted them, taken them, and hidden them in the earth inside his tent, and they were found as he said.
So the subject, with his household and all he had, was brought to the Valley of Achor and stoned, and a great heap of stones raised over him. The anger of the LORD turned away, and the place was called the Valley of Trouble.

- One person's hidden sin can bring defeat on a whole people.
- Coveting begins in the eye, moves to the hand, and hides in the dark.
