When Joshua sent two spies into Jericho, the subject, a harlot of the city, took them into her house and hid them under stalks of flax on the roof when the king's men came searching.
The subject confessed that she had heard how the LORD dried up the sea and gave victory over kings, and that dread of Israel had fallen on the city, for the LORD their God is God in heaven above and on earth below.
She asked for mercy for her household, and the spies swore an oath: she was to bind a scarlet cord in her window and gather her family within.
