Why he was struck silent: HE DID NOT BELIEVE THE ANGEL'S WORDS
What he wrote to end the silence: HIS NAME IS JOHN
The subject, a priest of the division of Abijah, and his wife Elizabeth were righteous before God, walking blamelessly, yet old and childless.
While burning incense in the temple, the subject was met by the angel Gabriel, who told him his prayer was heard: Elizabeth would bear a son named John, who would go before the Lord in the spirit of Elijah.
Because he doubted, asking how he could be sure given their age, the subject was struck silent until the promise was fulfilled, and he came out unable to speak to the waiting people.
When the child was born and neighbors expected the father's name, the subject wrote on a tablet, His name is John, and immediately his mouth was opened and he blessed God.
Filled with the Holy Spirit, he prophesied the Benedictus, blessing the God of Israel for visiting and redeeming His people, and foretelling his son as the prophet who would prepare the way.
EYES ONLYRestricted // Sacred Record
- God hears the prayers we have almost given up praying.
- Unbelief silences us, but God's word is sure regardless.
- When His promise arrives, our silence turns to praise.
