The subject and her husband Zechariah, a priest, were both righteous before God, walking blamelessly, yet they were old and childless, for she was barren.
While Zechariah served in the temple, an angel promised him a son. Elizabeth conceived, and hid herself, rejoicing that the Lord had taken away her reproach among the people.
When Mary, newly told she would bear the Messiah, came to visit, the child leaped in Elizabeth's womb, and she was filled with the Holy Spirit and called Mary blessed among women.
She asked how it was granted that the mother of her Lord should come to her, and blessed Mary for believing that the Lord's word would be fulfilled.
