The subject, a virgin betrothed to Joseph of the house of David, was visited by the angel Gabriel at Nazareth. She was told she would conceive by the Holy Spirit and bear a son to be called the Son of the Most High.
The subject consented, saying, Let it be to me according to your word. Visiting her relative Elizabeth, she offered a song magnifying the LORD who lifts the lowly and fills the hungry with good things.
She traveled to Bethlehem, where the child was born and laid in a manger. Shepherds and, later, magi came to worship. At the temple, Simeon foretold that a sword would pierce her own soul also.
The subject preserved and pondered these events. She was present when the child, grown, performed his first recorded sign at Cana, and she stood near the cross at his crucifixion, entrusted there to the beloved disciple.
The subject is last recorded among the disciples gathered in prayer before Pentecost. No account of her death is preserved in the record.
