Why he did not divorce Mary quietly: AN ANGEL TOLD HIM THE CHILD WAS OF THE SPIRIT
What name he was told to give: JESUS, FOR HE WILL SAVE HIS PEOPLE
The subject, a carpenter of Nazareth of the house of David, was betrothed to Mary. Finding her with child and being a just man unwilling to shame her, he resolved to divorce her quietly.
An angel appeared to him in a dream, telling him not to fear to take Mary as his wife, for the child in her was of the Holy Spirit, and he was to name the boy Jesus, for he would save his people from their sins.
The subject obeyed, took Mary as his wife, and named the child Jesus. He went with her to Bethlehem for the census, where the child was born.
Warned again in a dream, the subject fled with the child and his mother to Egypt to escape Herod's slaughter, and returned only after Herod died, settling in Nazareth.
The subject brought the child to the temple and to the Passover, and taught him his trade. He is last recorded when Jesus was twelve; the record preserves no account of his death.
