What he asked the magi to do: BRING WORD, THAT I TOO MAY COME AND WORSHIP
What he did when they did not return: KILLED ALL THE BOYS OF BETHLEHEM UNDER TWO
The subject reigned as king of Judea under Rome, a great and ruthless builder who enlarged the temple, yet was consumed by suspicion, having even members of his own family put to death to guard his throne.
When magi from the east came to Jerusalem asking where the king of the Jews had been born, the subject was troubled, and all Jerusalem with him, and he gathered the chief priests to learn that the Christ was to be born in Bethlehem.
He secretly summoned the magi, learned the time the star had appeared, and sent them to Bethlehem, asking them to bring back word so that he too might come and worship, though he meant only to destroy the child.
But the magi, warned in a dream, returned another way; and an angel warned Joseph to flee with the child and His mother into Egypt, out of the subject's reach.
When the subject saw he had been outwitted, he was furious, and sent and killed all the boys in Bethlehem two years old and under, fulfilling the weeping foretold by Jeremiah. Soon afterward the subject died, and it was safe for the child to return.
