Remarks:

The subject was a righteous and devout man of Jerusalem, waiting for the consolation of Israel, and the Holy Spirit was upon him.

It had been revealed to him by the Spirit that he would not see death before he had seen the Lord's Christ. Led by the Spirit into the temple courts, he came as Mary and Joseph brought in the infant Jesus.

The subject took the child in his arms and blessed God, saying, Lord, now you let your servant depart in peace, for my eyes have seen your salvation.

He named the child a light for revelation to the Gentiles and the glory of God's people Israel, a salvation prepared in the sight of all peoples.

He blessed the parents and told Mary that the child was set for the fall and rising of many in Israel, and a sign to be opposed, and that a sword would pierce her own soul also.
