What he offered to carry into exile with David: THE ARK OF THE COVENANT OF GOD
Whom he anointed at Gihon with the horn of oil: SOLOMON, THE RIGHTFUL KING
The subject was a priest of the line of Eleazar, loyal to David throughout his reign. When Absalom's revolt drove David from Jerusalem, the subject and the Levites carried out the ark of God to go with him.
But David sent the ark back into the city, telling the subject to return and serve as his eyes there, trusting that if the LORD delighted in him He would bring him back to see it again.
When David was old and Adonijah tried to seize the throne, the subject, unlike Abiathar, remained loyal, and with Nathan the prophet went down to Gihon at David's command.
There the subject took the horn of oil from the tent and anointed Solomon king, and the people blew the trumpet and shouted, Long live King Solomon.
Solomon confirmed the subject in the high priesthood in place of Abiathar, and his descendants, the Zadokites, kept the priestly office. The prophet Ezekiel later named his line as those who had kept charge of the sanctuary when others went astray.
