How he alone survived Doeg's sword: ESCAPED AND FLED TO DAVID WITH THE EPHOD
Why Solomon removed him from office: HE HAD FOLLOWED ADONIJAH, NOT SOLOMON
The subject was the son of Ahimelech, the only priest to escape when Saul had Doeg slaughter the priests of Nob. He fled to David carrying the ephod and became David's priest through the years of his wandering and reign.
By the ephod he inquired of the LORD for David in the wilderness, and he shared the king's hardships. When Absalom revolted, the subject and Zadok carried the ark out with David and served as his eyes in Jerusalem.
But in David's old age, when Adonijah sought the throne, the subject sided with him, while Zadok, Nathan, and Benaiah stood with Solomon.
When Solomon secured the kingdom, he called the subject to account. He spared his life for the sake of his faithful service to David and his sharing in all David's afflictions, but removed him from the priesthood and banished him to his fields at Anathoth.
So the subject was the last of the house of Eli to serve as priest, and his removal fulfilled the word the LORD had spoken long before against Eli's house, that it would be cut off from the priesthood.
EYES ONLYRestricted // Sacred Record
- Long faithfulness can be marred by a single loyalty misplaced at the end.
- Backing the wrong claimant to power carries lasting consequences.
- The word God speaks in judgment is fulfilled, though generations pass.
