The famous deed of his valor: WENT DOWN AND KILLED A LION IN A PIT ON A SNOWY DAY
Whom Solomon set him over: THE WHOLE ARMY OF ISRAEL
The subject was the son of Jehoiada, a valiant man of Kabzeel who did great deeds. He struck down two mighty men of Moab, went down into a pit on a snowy day and killed a lion, and slew a huge Egyptian with the man's own spear.
He was chief of David's bodyguard, set over the Cherethites and Pelethites, and named among the mighty men, though he did not attain to the first three.
When Adonijah tried to seize the throne, the subject stood with Zadok and Nathan for Solomon, and helped set him on the king's mule at Gihon to be anointed.
Under Solomon he carried out the king's justice, striking down Adonijah, Joab at the altar, and Shimei, for the crimes David had charged.
For his faithfulness Solomon set the subject over the whole army of Israel in place of Joab, and he served as a strong and loyal commander of the kingdom.
