What he pledged to give: HALF MY GOODS TO THE POOR, FOURFOLD TO ANY I HAVE CHEATED
Why the Son of Man came: TO SEEK AND TO SAVE THE LOST
The subject was a chief tax collector in Jericho, and rich. When Jesus was passing through, he wanted to see who he was but could not for the crowd, being small of stature.
So he ran ahead and climbed a sycamore tree to see him. When Jesus came to the place, he looked up and said, Zacchaeus, hurry and come down, for I must stay at your house today.
He came down joyfully and received him, while the crowd grumbled that Jesus had gone to be the guest of a sinner.
The subject stood and said to the Lord, Behold, half of my goods I give to the poor, and if I have defrauded anyone of anything, I restore it fourfold.
Jesus said, Today salvation has come to this house, since he also is a son of Abraham; for the Son of Man came to seek and to save the lost.
