What the Lord declared at the tomb: I AM THE RESURRECTION AND THE LIFE
Days he lay in the grave: FOUR
The subject, brother of Martha and Mary of Bethany, fell sick. His sisters sent word to Jesus, but the Lord delayed, saying the sickness would not end in death but for the glory of God.
By the time Jesus came, the subject had been in the tomb four days. Martha met him, and he declared, I am the resurrection and the life; whoever believes in me, though he die, yet shall he live.
Jesus wept at the tomb, then commanded the stone removed. He gave thanks and cried with a loud voice, Lazarus, come out, and the dead man came out, his hands and feet bound with grave clothes.
Many who saw it believed. But the sign so stirred the authorities that they plotted to put both Jesus and the subject to death, since on his account many were turning to the Lord.
The subject reclined at table with Jesus six days before the Passover, a living witness that the one who raised him was Lord over death itself. No account of his later death is preserved.
