What the Lord said to her: DO NOT WEEP
What the crowd declared in fear: GOD HAS VISITED HIS PEOPLE!
Soon after healing the centurion's servant, Jesus went to a town called Nain, followed by His disciples and a great crowd. As He drew near the gate of the town, a funeral procession was coming out.
A man who had died was being carried out, the only son of his mother, and she was a widow. She had lost her husband, and now her only son, left with no one to provide for or protect her. A large crowd from the town was with her.
When the Lord saw her, He had compassion on her and said, Do not weep. Then He came and touched the bier, and the bearers stood still. He said, Young man, I say to you, arise.
The dead man sat up and began to speak, and Jesus gave him back to his mother. It was an act of pure mercy, unasked, springing from His compassion for a grieving widow.
Fear seized them all, and they glorified God, saying that a great prophet had arisen among them and that God had visited His people. The report of it spread through the whole of Judea. The subject, who had asked nothing, received back her son and her hope from the Lord of life.
