Why he would not go home to his wife: THE ARK AND ISRAEL DWELL IN TENTS; SHALL I THEN GO TO MY HOUSE?
What the letter he carried commanded: SET URIAH IN THE FOREFRONT, THEN DRAW BACK, THAT HE MAY BE STRUCK DOWN
The subject was a Hittite by birth who had joined himself to Israel and become one of David's thirty mighty men, a soldier of proven valor and unbending loyalty, married to Bathsheba.
While he was away at the siege of Rabbah, David took Bathsheba and she conceived. To hide his sin, the king summoned the subject home, hoping he would go to his wife and the child seem his own.
But the subject would not take his ease. He slept at the palace gate with the servants, saying that while the ark and the army of Israel camped in the open field, he could not go home to eat, drink, and lie with his wife. Even made drunk, he would not go down to his house.
So David sent him back carrying his own death warrant, a letter to Joab ordering that he be placed in the fiercest fighting and then abandoned. The subject was struck down at the wall of Rabbah, faithful to the last.
His loyalty stood in stark contrast to the king's treachery. The prophet Nathan would later confront David with this very crime, and the sword would not depart from his house. The subject is named among the honored dead of Israel's mighty men.
EYES ONLYRestricted // Sacred Record
- Faithfulness may go unrewarded by men, yet it is seen by God.
- Sin covered by more sin only deepens the guilt.
- The integrity of one servant can shame the powerful.
