First child of the union: STRUCK AND TAKEN AS JUDGMENT
Nathan's verdict upon the king: YOU ARE THE MAN
The subject, daughter of Eliam and wife of Uriah the Hittite, was seen bathing by King David from his roof. He sent for her, lay with her, and she conceived; she is named in the record with sorrow, not with praise for the king.
To hide the matter David recalled Uriah, and when the loyal soldier would not go down to his house, the king had him set in the front of battle and abandoned to die. Then David took the widow as his wife, and she bore a son.
The thing displeased the LORD, and Nathan the prophet came with the parable of the poor man's lamb. When David condemned the rich man, Nathan answered, "You are the man," and pronounced the sword upon his house. The child sickened and died.
David comforted the subject, and she bore Solomon, whom the LORD loved and named Jedidiah. In his old age David swore to her that Solomon her son would reign, and she and Nathan moved to secure the throne against Adonijah.
The subject came before the king as queen mother, and Solomon rose to meet her and set a throne at his right hand. She is counted in the line of the kings, and her name is written among the mothers by whom the Christ came.
