How he mocked the builders: IF A FOX GOES UP ON IT, HE WILL BREAK DOWN THEIR STONE WALL
What Nehemiah did to his temple room: HE THREW ALL HIS HOUSEHOLD FURNITURE OUT OF THE CHAMBER
The subject, an Ammonite official, was greatly displeased when Nehemiah came to seek the welfare of the people of Israel. With Sanballat the Horonite he set himself against the rebuilding of Jerusalem's walls.
As the work rose, the subject scoffed alongside Sanballat, jeering that even a fox climbing the wall would break down their stones. But the people had a mind to work, and the wall went up to half its height.
When mockery failed, the adversaries plotted to attack the city. Nehemiah set the people to build with one hand and hold a weapon in the other, and the LORD frustrated the conspiracy.
The subject was bound by marriage and oath to many nobles of Judah, and they carried his words to Nehemiah and reported Nehemiah's words to him. He sent letters to stir up fear, but Nehemiah refused to be moved from the work.
Later, while Nehemiah was away, the priest Eliashib gave the subject a large chamber in the very courts of the house of God. On his return, Nehemiah was grieved, threw out all the subject's furniture, and had the rooms cleansed and restored to their holy use.
