How he first opposed the work: MOCKED, SAYING A FOX WOULD BREAK THEIR WALL
How the finished wall silenced him: THE NATIONS SAW IT WAS DONE BY OUR GOD
The subject was a leader of Samaria who, with Tobiah the Ammonite and Geshem the Arab, was deeply displeased when Nehemiah came to seek the welfare of Israel and rebuild the ruined wall of Jerusalem.
At first he mocked and ridiculed the builders, jeering that even a fox climbing on their stone wall would break it down, seeking to discourage them.
When mockery failed, he and his allies plotted to come and fight against Jerusalem, so that the people worked with a tool in one hand and a weapon in the other, and Nehemiah set a guard and prayed.
He tried repeatedly to lure Nehemiah out to a meeting to do him harm, sent an open letter of false accusation to intimidate him, and hired a prophet to frighten him into sin, but Nehemiah refused every scheme.
The wall was finished in fifty-two days. When his enemies and the surrounding nations heard, they were afraid and fell in their own esteem, for they perceived that this work had been accomplished with the help of God.
