What was not required of him at Jerusalem: HE WAS NOT COMPELLED TO BE CIRCUMCISED
Why Paul left him behind in Crete: TO PUT WHAT REMAINED INTO ORDER
The subject was a Greek, a Gentile believer whom Paul took to Jerusalem as living proof that faith in Christ, not the law of Moses, saves; and there he was not compelled to be circumcised.
He became one of Paul's most trusted companions, sent on the hardest errands. When the church at Corinth was in turmoil, the subject carried Paul's severe letter and brought back word of their repentance, comforting the anxious apostle.
He returned to Corinth to complete the collection for the poor saints in Jerusalem, and Paul commended him as his partner and fellow worker, eager and earnest of his own accord.
Paul left the subject on the island of Crete to put what remained into order and to appoint elders in every town, and wrote him a letter of instruction for that difficult work among a hard people.
The subject is remembered as a steady, capable servant who could bring peace to a divided church and order to a young one, faithful wherever the mission sent him.
