How Paul described his trade: LUKE, THE BELOVED PHYSICIAN
Who was with Paul at the last: ONLY LUKE IS WITH ME
The subject was a physician, called by Paul the beloved physician, and by tradition a Gentile of Antioch, the only likely non-Jewish writer of the New Testament.
He set out to write an orderly account for one named Theophilus, having carefully investigated everything from the beginning, following the eyewitnesses and ministers of the word, that his reader might know the certainty of what he had been taught.
His Gospel is rich in the mercy of Christ toward the poor, the outcast, women, and sinners, and his second book, the Acts, traces the gospel from Jerusalem to Rome.
In parts of Acts he writes as an eyewitness, saying we, for he traveled with Paul on his journeys, sharing shipwreck and imprisonment and the labors of the mission.
He remained with Paul to the end. In the apostle's last letter, when others had deserted him, Paul wrote that only the subject was with him, a faithful companion and careful chronicler of the acts of Christ and His church.
