Why he left Paul: IN LOVE WITH THIS PRESENT WORLD, HE DESERTED ME
Where he went: HE HAS GONE TO THESSALONICA
The subject was once counted among Paul's trusted companions. In the letters from Paul's earlier imprisonment he is named simply as a fellow worker, sending greetings alongside Luke and others.
For a time he shared in the labor and the fellowship of the gospel, standing near the apostle in the work and bearing the name of a co-laborer in Christ.
But in Paul's final letter, written as he awaited death, a sorrowful note is struck. The subject had abandoned him, drawn away not by persecution's threat but by the pull of the world.
Paul wrote plainly that the subject, in love with this present world, had deserted him and gone to Thessalonica. No dramatic denial, no open renouncing of Christ, only a quiet turning back toward what the world offered.
He stands in the record as a solemn contrast to the faithful Luke, who remained. His name is a warning that nearness to great servants of God is not the same as endurance, and that the love of the world can cool a heart once warm.
