Where the faith first dwelt: FIRST IN YOUR GRANDMOTHER LOIS AND YOUR MOTHER EUNICE
What Timothy had known from childhood: THE SACRED WRITINGS, ABLE TO MAKE HIM WISE FOR SALVATION
The subjects were the grandmother and mother of Timothy, Paul's beloved son in the faith. Eunice was a believing Jewish woman of Lystra married to a Greek, and Lois was her mother.
Paul recalled the sincere faith that first dwelt in Lois and then in Eunice, and he was persuaded dwelt in Timothy as well, a living inheritance passed down through three generations.
From childhood they had taught Timothy the sacred writings, which were able to make him wise for salvation through faith in Christ Jesus, so that the foundation was laid long before Paul found him.
Though the household was mixed and the father unbelieving, these women did not neglect the boy's soul. They filled his earliest years with the Scriptures and the fear of the LORD.
The fruit of their quiet faithfulness was a man Paul could send to the churches in his own place. The subjects stand as a testimony that the unseen discipleship of the home shapes the servants of tomorrow.
