What he was never ashamed of: MY CHAINS; HE OFTEN REFRESHED ME AND SOUGHT ME OUT
What Paul prayed over his house: MAY THE LORD GRANT MERCY TO THE HOUSEHOLD OF ONESIPHORUS
As Paul lay in prison in Rome awaiting his end, many in Asia had turned away from him. Against that backdrop the subject shines as a rare and faithful friend.
Paul recorded that the subject often refreshed him and was not ashamed of his chains, unlike those who kept their distance from a prisoner of Rome for fear of sharing his disgrace.
When the subject came to Rome, he searched eagerly for Paul until he found him, unwilling to let the apostle languish unvisited and uncomforted in his confinement.
Paul also remembered how much service the subject had rendered earlier at Ephesus, a friendship proven over time and in more than one place.
For all this Paul prayed that the Lord would grant mercy to the household of the subject, and that he himself would find mercy from the Lord on that Day. He stands as a portrait of the friend who is not ashamed, who seeks out and refreshes the servant of God when others fall away.
