Where his faith first dwelt: IN LOIS AND EUNICE BEFORE HIM
Paul's charge against his fear: GOD GAVE NOT A SPIRIT OF FEAR, BUT OF POWER
The subject was a disciple at Lystra, son of a believing Jewish mother, Eunice, and a Greek father. He was well spoken of by the brothers, and from childhood he had known the sacred writings taught him by his mother and grandmother Lois.
Paul chose him as a traveling companion and treated him as a true child in the faith. Together they carried the gospel through Macedonia and Greece, and Paul sent him on delicate missions to the churches.
Though young and prone to timidity, the subject was entrusted with great responsibility, at length overseeing the church at Ephesus and guarding it against false teaching.
Paul wrote to him to let no one despise his youth, but to set the believers an example in speech, conduct, love, faith, and purity, and to fan into flame the gift that was in him.
In his final letter Paul charged him to preach the word in season and out, to endure suffering, and to do the work of an evangelist, entrusting the faith to faithful men who would teach others also.
