What Saul had once done to her kind: HE HAD CUT OFF THE MEDIUMS AND NECROMANCERS FROM THE LAND
Why she cried out in fear: SHE SAW SAMUEL AND KNEW THE STRANGER WAS SAUL
The LORD had turned away from Saul and would not answer him by dreams, by Urim, or by prophets. On the eve of battle with the Philistines, terrified, the king sought a medium, though he himself had banished them from the land.
Disguised, Saul came by night to the subject at Endor and asked her to bring up a spirit for him. She feared a trap, for the king had cut off such practices, but he swore no harm would come to her.
When she called up Samuel, she cried out, for God permitted the prophet truly to appear, and by it she perceived that her visitor was Saul himself.
Samuel gave Saul no comfort, but confirmed that the LORD had torn the kingdom from him and that he and his sons would fall the next day. Saul collapsed in dread and hunger.
The subject, seeing him overcome, urged him to eat and prepared a meal before he went out into the night to his death. Her account stands as a witness to Saul's final descent: a king who, abandoning the LORD, turned to the very darkness he had once condemned.
