Word of Samuel at his rejection: TO OBEY IS BETTER THAN SACRIFICE
Whom he consulted on the last night: THE MEDIUM AT EN-DOR
The subject, a Benjamite son of Kish, went to seek his father's lost donkeys and found instead a kingdom. Samuel anointed him at the LORD's word, and when the lots were cast he was taken, a man head and shoulders above the people.
The Spirit of God came upon him, and he delivered Jabesh-gilead from the Ammonites, and the people renewed the kingdom before the LORD at Gilgal. For a time he reigned and warred against every enemy round about.
But at Gilgal the subject offered the burnt offering without waiting for Samuel, and in the war with Amalek he spared the king and the best of the spoil against the command of the LORD. Samuel declared the kingdom torn from him and given to a better man.
The Spirit departed from the subject and a harmful spirit troubled him. He grew jealous of David, sought his life again and again, and murdered the priests of Nob. On his last night he sought a medium at En-dor, for the LORD would not answer him.
In the battle on Mount Gilboa the Philistines struck down his sons, and the subject, wounded by the archers, fell upon his own sword. So died the first king of Israel, who was rejected because he did not keep the word of the LORD.
EYES ONLYRestricted // Sacred Record
- Partial obedience is still disobedience before God.
- Fear of the people's opinion leads a leader astray.
- A kingdom is kept by faithfulness, not by outward stature.
