Why Saul lost the kingdom over him: HE SPARED THE KING AND THE BEST OF THE SPOIL
Samuel's word as he struck him down: AS YOUR SWORD HAS MADE WOMEN CHILDLESS
The subject was king of the Amalekites, the people who had attacked Israel in the wilderness and whom the LORD had sworn to blot out. Through Samuel, God commanded Saul to strike Amalek and devote all to destruction.
Saul went and defeated Amalek, but he spared the subject and kept the best of the sheep and oxen, unwilling to destroy them, and only the worthless he devoted.
The LORD was grieved, and told Samuel that Saul had turned back from following Him. Samuel confronted the king, who blamed the people and claimed the animals were for sacrifice.
Samuel declared that to obey is better than sacrifice, and that because Saul had rejected the word of the LORD, the LORD had rejected him from being king.
Then Samuel called for the subject, who came to him delicately, thinking the bitterness of death was past. But Samuel said that as his sword had made women childless, so his mother would be childless among women, and he hewed the subject in pieces before the LORD at Gilgal.
EYES ONLYRestricted // Sacred Record
- Partial obedience that spares what God condemned is still rebellion.
- To obey is better than sacrifice; God desires our submission most.
- Sin left alive and spared often returns to trouble God's people.
