What he gave the hungry David: THE HOLY BREAD OF THE PRESENCE
Who reported him to Saul: DOEG THE EDOMITE, WHO SAW IT ALL
The subject was the priest at Nob when David fled from Saul. David came to him alone and hungry, and the subject, having no common bread, gave him the holy bread of the Presence, which had been removed from before the LORD.
David also asked for a weapon, and the subject gave him the sword of Goliath the Philistine, which had been kept there wrapped behind the ephod, saying there was none like it.
Doeg the Edomite, Saul's chief herdsman, was there that day and saw it. He reported to Saul that the subject had inquired of the LORD for David and supplied him with food and a sword.
Saul summoned the subject and all the priests of Nob and accused them of conspiracy. The subject answered that David was the king's own faithful servant and son-in-law, and that he had known nothing of any quarrel.
But Saul commanded his guards to kill the priests, and when they would not lift a hand against the LORD's priests, Doeg fell on them and killed eighty-five men who wore the ephod, and struck the whole town of Nob. Only one son, Abiathar, escaped to David.
EYES ONLYRestricted // Sacred Record
- An act of simple mercy can be counted a crime by a jealous heart.
- The Lord later pointed to this bread to teach that mercy outweighs ritual.
- The innocent may suffer for the guilt of those who hate God's anointed.
